Bug's Birthday eve

My daughter Kaitlyn is about to turn 8 tomorrow. Saturday January 31st. As with probably any 7 going on 8 year old, she is very excited. From the time the ball hit bottom in Times Square and December became January, Kaitlyn has been pointing out that her birthday is coming.

Last Friday she pointed out to me that in a week it would be her "Birthday Eve." I am pretty sure that Birthday Eve is something that only exists in the happy little world of Kaitlyn's mind. Yesterday, I awoke to the question, "Daddy, is it Thursday or Friday?" Let me point out that Kaity always knows what day it is. Typically it is I who asks Kaity what day it is. When I replied that I was pretty sure it was Thursday, she didn't miss her chance to say, "Oh.....if it was Friday I could say "It's my birthday tomorrow!!"" I just kind of gave her a sideways look and thought, Dear God please let us skip Friday and go right to Saturday so I can get this kid off my back.

Last night sitting at the table doing her homework, she asked me what the "day after tomorrow" is. Since I was more focused on getting through her math homework, (did you know that you no longer just add or subtract? Now you "group" numbers into some sort of chart to create a "fact-family". I think I need to go back to 2nd grade cause I am doing my math too fast and only in my head!) I was not paying any mind to what she was trying to imply. So when I responded that the day after tomorrow was Saturday, she gave me back the sideways look I had given her that morning and said, "No daddy! It's my birthday!" I just put my head down on the table and tried to not scream so I could get past this new math!

That brings us to this morning....yep, you guessed it. It is not just Friday. It is Kaitlyn's birthday eve. I am sure that in China town they are blowing off any fireworks left over from the Chinese New Year. I can see the workers redcorating that Times Square ball to make it look like a birthday cake in preparation of lowering it at midnight to usher in the year 0008 in Kaitlyn time. Or would that be 0009? F****ing new math! As I was driving Kaitlyn to her cousin's on my way to work, she was singing the whole way. It was a catchy tune. The lyrics were fairly simple. Simply choose any melody you want and sing "Tomorrow's my birthday!" over and over and over again.

I have no clue what my wife has decided to by Kaitlyn as a gift, but somehow I think if it is anything less than a pony with a golden saddle, I am never going to hear the end of it. I can only imagine how much this poor kid is going to be bouncing off the walls tomorrow. I am also pretty sure Sunday morning she will be pointing out that it is only "364 more days till my 9th birthday Daddy!"

Happy Birthday Baby Bug. I love you!
